The West Cork Times was started by Clare Farrelly and business partner David Forsythe at the end of 2012.

The initial concept was a daily news website for West Cork but after a while it became apparent that businesses in the area were reluctant to invest their adspend into online advertising at that stage.

Westcorktimes.com was however becoming very popular so it was decided to produce a publication for each town, e.g. Beara Times, on a fortnightly basis with a roundup of the news from the website and very local advertising. This worked extremely well and about a year later it was decided to combine all publications into one called West Cork Times.

The population of West Cork is 80,000. The title currently produce 10,000 copies per fortnightly issue and this is distributed all over West Cork and Kenmare, South Kerry. It is distributed through supermarkets, libraries, tourist offices, post offices, banks, hotels, etc. The readership is approx. 40,000 and is the biggest free newspaper in West Cork. The size of the paper is American A4, the size of Newsweek. This size has worked well as most outlets are happy to place something of that size at the end of checkouts and counters.

Each issue is available to view on www.westcorktimes.com which has in excess of 40,000 views per month. There is also have a very active Facebook page with excess of 8,000 ‘likes’
